This is the most complete study published to date on devotion to Our Lady in Ireland. When the subject of Irish devotion to Mary is mentioned, one takes it for granted that it has always been part of the church in Ireland. Recently a few historians have cast doubt on its antiquity. This study makes an impartial examination of the evidence for the existence and nature of this devotion throughout the centuries. It is not limited to printed sources but also includes an examination of manuscript material still unedited. The result shows a deep theological and personal devotion to Mary in Latin, Gaelic and English writings.
